The Sapsan is Russia’s fastest train, with a top speed of 250 km/h. Named for the peregrine falcon and built by the German company Siemens Transportation Systems, the Sapsan operates on the Moscow – St Petersburg and St Petersburg – Nizhny Novgorod route. Several trains run daily on these routes.
A Sapsan train will have either 10 or 20 cars. The standard 10-car trainset consists of 1 Premium Class car (seating 19, with an additional 4 seats in the conference room), 1 Business Class car (seating 52 passengers), 6 Economy Class cars (seating 64 each) and 1 Economy+ Class car (seating 51). There is also a bistro car which can seat 40 passengers.
1st Class and Business tickets include a hot meal and newspapers/magazines. The conference room in the 1st Class car can only be booked in full (all 4 seats) but offers additional amenities including beverages and the room’s TV and gaming system. Seats in 1st Class are arranged in rows of three (2 + 1) while Business and Economy Class are arranged in rows of 4 (2+ 2). 1st Class and Business Class seats have 220V sockets and lamps. Economy passengers can order hot meals from the bistro; all other ticket classes include a hot meal.
