The modernization of the railway infrastructure of the BAM and Trans-Siberian Railway
October 27, 2014 Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on the modernization of the railway infrastructure of the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline) and Trans-Siberian Railway.
The project was being discussed since St. Petersburg Economic Forum in 2013. Its main objective is to upgrade railway infrastructure. Much attention will be paid to freight: new tracks are to be constructed, railways capacity and train carrying capacity are to be increased. Passenger transportation will also be paid attention to. Under this project, train stations and border crossings of the Far East will be upgraded, new rolling stock will be acquired.
In total, the project will invest about 560 billion rubles by 2018. The money will come from the Government of the Russian Federation, National Welfare Fund and Russian Railways.
